What is the actual difference between proportional and time delay?
A proportional controller contains an accelerometer or a pendulum style sensor that measures the tow vehicle's own deceleration, then sends the trailer brakes a current proportional to that reading. Brake gently and the trailer brakes gently. Brake hard and the trailer brakes hard, at almost the same instant as the tow vehicle. A time delay controller has no sensor. It applies a preset current on a preset ramp every time the brake pedal is touched, so the trailer brakes come on at the same rate whether you are slowing for a light or stopping short for a stalled car ahead.
The practical result is that a time delay controller either under-brakes the trailer in an emergency, which is a stopping distance problem, or over-brakes it in gentle traffic, which is a trailer nose-diving and pushing the tow vehicle problem. Neither is acceptable on a heavy trailer, which is why a proportional controller is the default recommendation across this entire portfolio and a time delay unit is only ever a budget compromise for a light, occasionally towed trailer.

Axle support caps the number of brake circuits the controller can drive, not how heavy the trailer can be. A single axle trailer at 10,000 lb and a triple axle trailer at 10,000 lb need the same current, just routed to a different number of magnets.
Do you legally need trailer brakes at all?
Trailer brakes are legally required above a threshold that varies by state, commonly somewhere between 1,500 and 5,000 lb of trailer weight, and there is no single federal number that covers every state. Check your own state DMV or DOT site and the certification label on the trailer itself rather than assuming a figure. If the trailer has electric brakes at all, it needs a controller, full stop, regardless of what the legal minimum happens to be where you live.
How do you actually set the gain once it is installed?
- Start conservative. Set the gain to a low to middle value on the dial before the first tow, not the manufacturer default, which is frequently set for a heavier trailer than yours.
- Test at low speed. At about 20 mph on a straight, empty road, apply the tow vehicle brakes normally and feel for the trailer. It should feel like the trailer is helping to stop the rig, not fighting the tow vehicle and not doing nothing.
- Use the manual override alone. Pull the manual override lever by itself, with no vehicle brake pedal applied. The trailer brakes should engage firmly without locking up or skidding the trailer tires on dry pavement.
- Adjust in small steps. Too little gain feels like the tow vehicle is doing all the work and the trailer is pushing on hard stops. Too much gain feels like a jerk or a chirp from the trailer tires on a normal stop. Move the dial a small amount and retest rather than guessing at a big change.
- Re-test loaded and empty. An empty trailer and a loaded one brake completely differently on the same gain setting. Retest after any real change in cargo, water or propane, and before a trip that changes the load meaningfully.
