Which ball fits your coupler?

Quick answer

The ball must match the size stamped on the coupler exactly. A 1-7/8 inch coupler will sit down over a 2 inch ball and appear to latch, and it will come off on the road. A 2 inch coupler will not close on a 2-5/16 inch ball at all, which is the safer of the two failures. No adapter makes a mismatch acceptable.

This is the simplest decision in towing and one of the most consequential. The coupler on your trailer has its size stamped or cast into it, usually on the top face near the latch. Whatever that says is what you buy.

There is no "close enough" here. The dangerous direction is a coupler larger than the ball: a 1-7/8 inch coupler dropped onto a 2 inch ball will go down, the latch will appear to close, and the connection will separate under load. The reverse, a 2 inch coupler on a 2-5/16 inch ball, simply will not close, which fails safe.

The capacity stamped on your own ball and shank governs and is frequently lower than the figures here. Ball and coupler dimensions are a published dimensional standard, which is why any correctly sized ball fits any correctly sized coupler.

Three ratings, not one

A ball assembly has three separate figures and all three have to clear your trailer:

  • The ball diameter, which must match the coupler exactly.
  • The ball capacity, stamped on the top of the ball.
  • The shank diameter and its capacity, which must fit the hole in your ball mount and carry the load.

A 2-5/16 inch ball rated to 30,000 lb on a 1 inch shank rated to 10,000 lb is a 10,000 lb assembly. Buying the biggest ball does not help if the shank or the mount is the limit.

Torque the ball nut

This is the single most commonly skipped step on a new hitch, and a ball nut that backs off is a trailer that separates. Torque it to the figure the ball maker publishes, which is typically in the hundreds of foot-pounds and well beyond what a standard 150 ft-lb wrench reaches.

Check it again after the first trip and periodically after that. A loaded ball works against that nut continuously.

Can I use a 2 inch ball on a 1-7/8 inch coupler?

Absolutely not, and this is the dangerous mismatch. A 1-7/8 inch coupler will sit down over a 2 inch ball and the latch will appear to close, but the socket cannot grip it and the connection separates under load on the road. The reverse mismatch, a 2 inch coupler on a 2-5/16 inch ball, will not close at all, which fails safe. There is no adapter that makes either acceptable.

Where do I find my coupler size?

Stamped or cast into the coupler itself, usually on the top face near the latch mechanism. It will read 1-7/8, 2 or 2-5/16 inch. If it has worn illegible, measure the inside diameter of the socket carefully, and if you are between sizes replace the coupler rather than guessing, because a worn socket is itself a reason to replace it.

What shank size do I need?

The shank has to fit the hole in your ball mount and carry the load. Common sizes are 3/4 inch, 1 inch and 1-1/4 inch, and the shank carries its own capacity rating separate from the ball. Fitting a 2-5/16 inch ball to a class III mount does not give you class V capacity, and your vehicle ratings still sit above all of it.
