How do you work out the drop or rise your ball mount actually needs?

The two measurements

  1. Load the tow vehicle the way you will actually drive it. Full fuel, passengers, cargo in the bed, and anything else riding along. A loaded truck sits noticeably lower at the rear, often an inch or more, and the tolerance on this whole exercise is about an inch.
  2. Measure A: ground to the top inside edge of the receiver opening. Not the bottom of the receiver tube, the top inside edge of the opening itself. This is where a ball mount's own drop or rise is measured from on every manufacturer's spec sheet.
  3. Get the trailer frame level, unhitched, on flat ground. Use its jack to bring the trailer frame level, the same way it will sit when towing correctly, not tipped up on the jack or resting nose down.
  4. Measure B: ground to the bottom of the coupler. With the frame level from the previous step. This is the height the ball needs to reach for the trailer to tow level.
  5. Subtract: drop equals A minus B. If A is larger than B, the result is positive and you need a mount with that much drop. If B is larger than A, the result is negative and you need that much rise instead.
  6. Buy a mount that gets close, and check the shank length too. Ball mounts come in fixed increments. A mount with roughly the same drop as your calculated figure, or a small adjustable range around it, is the goal, not exact-to-the-quarter-inch precision.

Why nose high is the dangerous mistake and nose low is the safer one

A trailer towing nose high, meaning the front of the trailer sits higher than level, shifts the trailer's effective weight rearward relative to the hitch. That reduces tongue weight at the exact moment it matters most, because low tongue weight is the condition that lets trailer sway start and grow. A trailer that is a little nose high looks fine standing still and behaves worse than it looks the moment a crosswind or a passing truck gives it a nudge.

A trailer towing nose low is the safer direction to be wrong in. It shifts weight forward, which tends to add tongue weight rather than remove it, and while it is not the goal, it does not feed the same runaway oscillation that a light tongue does. Between guessing high and guessing low, guessing low costs you ride comfort and headlight aim rather than stability.

Common stocked drop and rise sizes

Ball mounts are sold in fixed increments rather than built to order, so the real question after doing the arithmetic is which stocked size gets you closest.

Stocked ball mounts commonly cover 2 to 8 inches of drop or rise, and an adjustable channel mount closes gaps a fixed mount cannot.

Matching the calculation to a real mount

If your calculation lands close to a fixed size, a fixed 2 inch drop mount with the ball already installed or a similar loaded 2 inch drop mount is the simplest and cheapest correct purchase, and buying an adjustable mount when you need a fixed 2 inches is over-buying rather than a safer choice. If your calculation falls between stocked sizes, or you switch between more than one trailer with different coupler heights, an adjustable dual-ball channel mount or a stowable adjustable mount covers a range rather than one fixed point. For a truck with a noticeably lifted stance, a mount with a full 6 inches of adjustment or a deep 8 inch drop shank reaches further than most fixed mounts.

Every one of these mounts is doing the same job: closing the gap between A and B. The size is the only variable, and the size comes from the measurement, not from what looks close enough in a parking lot.
