Payload or towing capacity: which one actually stops you first?
Two numbers get compared constantly and treated as roughly interchangeable, and they are not. Towing capacity, the published tow rating, describes how much trailer a specific configuration can pull under a defined test, with a driver aboard and nothing else. Payload describes how much total weight, people, cargo, hitch hardware and the trailer's tongue or pin weight combined, the vehicle can carry on its own structure and suspension. They are measured differently, they are exhausted by different things, and on the vehicles most people actually drive, payload runs out first.
An adjustable air spring kit sized for a mid-size SUV exists because payload runs out this way constantly: a squatting rear end under a modest trailer's tongue weight plus a full load of passengers and gear, well inside the advertised tow rating, but pressing hard against a payload figure the brochure never highlighted.
Work payload first, every time. If the payload sum fails, the tow rating is irrelevant, because the vehicle cannot legally or safely carry what getting to that tow rating would require.
What is each number actually measuring?
Both figures exist only on the reader's own vehicle, and a published tow rating specifically assumes a driver and nothing else, while payload has to absorb everything actually loaded.

What does a real payload sum actually look like?
Adding four adults, hitch hardware and a 7,000 lb trailer's conventional tongue weight commonly runs past 1,700 lb before cargo is even counted.

Why doesn't a weight distribution hitch fix a payload shortfall?
Because a weight distribution hitch moves tongue weight between axles once it is already on the truck, it does not remove any of that weight from the truck's payload total. The tongue weight still counts in full against payload whether it sits mostly on the rear axle or has been levered forward onto the steer axle. An integrated weight distribution hitch improves steering, braking and headlight aim under that load. It does not create a single additional pound of payload.
Does GCWR headroom matter if payload has already failed?
GCWR is still a real, separate limit worth checking, but a failed payload sum is the more urgent problem in practice, because payload failures happen at ordinary, everyday loading levels that many owners never think to weigh. A trailer well inside the published tow rating and well inside GCWR headroom can still put a truck over its payload rating the moment passengers, cargo and tongue weight are added together, which is exactly the scenario the tow rating's own test never simulates.

A trailer well inside the tow rating can still push the vehicle over its payload rating once everything actually loaded is added up.

What should I do if my payload sum comes up short?
Remove weight first: fewer passengers, less cargo, a lighter trailer or a genuinely lighter tongue weight. If the sum still fails, the fix is a vehicle with a higher payload rating, not a weight distribution hitch, air bags or helper springs, since none of that hardware adds a single pound of payload capacity.
