  1. Find a flat, dry, empty surface. An empty industrial road or a large empty lot with nothing behind you and nothing to hit. Not a public highway, and not while it is raining.
  2. Set a starting gain. Somewhere in the middle of the controller's range is a reasonable place to begin. The exact starting number matters far less than the test that follows.
  3. Roll at about 25 mph. Slow enough to be safe if something goes wrong, fast enough that the trailer brakes have real work to do.
  4. Apply the manual override lever alone. Foot completely off the tow vehicle brake pedal. You are isolating the trailer brakes so you can feel exactly what they do on their own.
  5. Raise the gain until the trailer brakes just barely grab or lock. You are looking for the point where the trailer noticeably pulls the whole rig back, just at the edge of locking a wheel.
