The breakaway pull test

  1. Hitch up and make the full electrical connection. Connect the 7-way plug the same as normal towing. The breakaway battery trickle charges through this connector, so the test only means something if the connector has actually been making contact on recent trips.
  2. Confirm the breakaway cable is clipped to the tow vehicle. Check that the far end of the breakaway cable is looped through a dedicated anchor point or the tow vehicle's frame, never to a safety chain. This is worth confirming every time you hitch, not only during this test.
  3. Choose open, flat ground with room to move. A driveway or empty lot with a few feet of clear space ahead of the tow vehicle. Nobody should be standing near the trailer's wheels.
  4. Pull the breakaway pin by hand. The pin sits in a small switch on the trailer's A-frame, usually with a lanyard or cable running to the tow vehicle. Pulling it fires the switch exactly as a real separation would.
  5. Ease the tow vehicle forward a few feet. Slowly, in the lowest gear available. A working breakaway system locks the trailer's wheels hard enough that they skid or drag rather than roll freely behind the moving tow vehicle.
  6. Reinsert the pin and stop the tow vehicle. Push the pin back into the switch to release the brakes, and confirm the trailer rolls freely again before continuing.
  7. Check the breakaway battery's own charge indicator. Many breakaway kits, such as a breakaway kit with a built-in charger and LED display, carry a test button and a charge light separate from the pull test. Press it before every trip, since a battery that fires weakly on the pull test may still be marginal even if it technically locked the wheels once.

Reading what actually happened

The pull test gives one of a few outcomes, and each one points to a different fix. None of this is a published standard, it is the consensus procedure taught by breakaway kit manufacturers and RV service shops.

A trailer that skids or drags its wheels when the tow vehicle eases forward has a working breakaway circuit. One that rolls freely does not, and the battery is the first thing to check.

Testing the service brakes separately

The pull test checks the breakaway circuit. The ordinary service brakes, the ones the brake controller fires every time you touch the tow vehicle's pedal, deserve their own quick check on a quiet street at low speed before a real trip. Reach for the controller's manual override lever and apply it gently while rolling. A working system produces a firm, immediate tug from the trailer.
