The pre-trip checklist

  1. Coupler latched and pinned. Check by hand, not by eye. A latch resting closed against the ball can look fine and still separate on the first hard bump. Confirm the locking pin or clip is actually in place.
  2. Safety chains crossed under the tongue. Crossed chains form a cradle that catches the tongue if the coupler ever fails, rather than letting it drop straight to the pavement. Leave enough slack for turns without letting them drag.

  5. Tire pressure checked cold, to the sidewall maximum. ST trailer tires are rated at their maximum cold inflation pressure, not a lower comfort figure like a passenger car tire. Check before the trailer has moved, using a gauge rated well above the tire's own maximum rather than a car gauge that may not even read that high.
  6. Lug nuts torqued to spec. And rechecked after the first fifty miles on a freshly mounted wheel, since wheels bed in and loosen. A calibrated torque wrench is worth owning rather than guessing by feel.

  8. Hitch pin secured, ideally with a lock. A locking receiver pin keeps the ball mount from being lifted out of the receiver at a stop, in addition to holding it in place mechanically while driving.

  10. Load secured and tongue weight checked if anything changed. A new battery, a full water tank instead of an empty one, or gear moved to a different spot in the trailer all shift the actual tongue weight from what it was last time.
  11. Coupler lock removed before hitching. If a coupler lock was left on from the last time the trailer was parked, it needs to come off before the coupler can close over the ball.
  12. Jacks fully raised and stowed. A tongue jack or landing gear left down and dragging is one of the most common rushed-hitch mistakes. Confirm it is fully retracted before moving.
  13. Wheel chocks removed. If wheel chocks were used while hitching or working under the trailer, this is the final step, done only once everything above is confirmed.

What tire pressure "to the sidewall maximum" actually means

An ST trailer tire is rated to carry its full published load only at its maximum cold inflation pressure, printed directly on the sidewall, and this is different from how a passenger car tire is set. A car tire is set from the door jamb placard, usually well below the sidewall maximum. A trailer tire is run at the sidewall maximum, cold, every time, unless the trailer manufacturer states something different. Running an ST tire soft is one of the most common and most preventable causes of a blown trailer tire, because the sidewall flexes, heats and fails, and it fails at highway speed on the corner nobody is watching.

"Cold" means before the trailer has moved that day, not after a fuel stop a few miles down the road, since the tire has already heated and pressurized by then.
