  2. Hold the steering wheel straight. The instinct is to steer against the sway. Resist it. Counter-steering a swaying trailer very commonly amplifies the oscillation instead of correcting it, because the correction arrives out of phase with the trailer's own motion.
  3. Find the brake controller and pull the manual override lever. This applies the trailer brakes only, independent of the tow vehicle brake pedal. Know exactly where this lever is before you ever need it: reaching for it for the first time during a sway event costs seconds you do not have.

Why steering out of it makes it worse

A trailer swaying behind a tow vehicle is oscillating at its own natural rate, set by its length, its weight distribution and its speed. A steering correction applied by hand almost never arrives perfectly in phase with that oscillation, and a correction that is even slightly out of phase adds energy to the sway rather than removing it.
