What does a trailer axle's capacity rating actually cover, and what governs when the tires disagree with it?
A trailer axle's capacity rating states the most weight that axle assembly, its beam, spindles, bearings, hubs and brakes together, is rated to carry. It is a real engineered figure published by the axle manufacturer, not a convention, and it appears in fixed steps rather than as a continuous range because axle makers build to a limited set of standard capacities that suit common trailer sizes.
Axle capacity is only half of the load-bearing equation. The tires bolted to that axle carry the same load, and a tire has its own separately published maximum load rating, covered in full on the trailer tire load index chart and the trailer tire load range chart. A 7,000 lb rated axle fitted with tires rated for only 5,000 lb combined does not somehow carry 7,000 lb safely: the lower of the two figures is what the assembly can actually carry, full stop.

These are the ratings that appear across most trailer axle manufacturers, not a single figure enforced by one standards body. Your trailer's specific axle rating, stamped on the axle tag, is the number that governs, and it can differ from what a nominal trailer weight class would suggest.
What total axle capacity does a tandem or triple configuration produce?
A tandem set of 3,500 lb axles produces 7,000 lb of combined axle capacity, but the trailer's actual GVWR is frequently set below that figure once the frame, tires and hitch are all accounted for.

Multiplying per-axle rating by axle count gives the combined AXLE capacity only. The trailer's actual GVWR, stamped on its certification label, is frequently set lower than this total once frame, tire and hitch limits are all factored in by the trailer manufacturer, so never assume GVWR equals axle count times per-axle rating.
Why does the lower of axle capacity and tire capacity always govern?
An axle rating and a tire rating are two independent ceilings on the exact same physical load path: the weight sitting on that axle passes straight through the hub and spindle into the tire, and the tire's own published load rating, from its load index and load range, is a completely separate engineering limit set by the tire maker rather than the axle maker. Neither rating raises the other. A trailer built with a 7,000 lb axle but fitted with tires rated for only 2,205 lb each, the load index 108 size, produces a two-tire axle capacity of only about 4,410 lb, well under the axle's own 7,000 lb rating.
The reverse is just as real: strong tires bolted to a lighter-rated axle do not raise what that axle can safely carry. What is the authority when the numbers disagree?
The trailer's own federal certification label, mounted on the A-frame or front cap, states the trailer's actual GVWR and the axle rating the manufacturer built it around, and that label is the final word over any general chart, including this one. A trailer manufacturer may deliberately fit axles rated somewhat above the trailer's stated GVWR as a margin of engineering reserve, which is normal and not something to "use up" by loading closer to the axle's own ceiling than the trailer's certified GVWR allows.
How do you check your own trailer's axle and tire capacity together?
- Read the trailer's certification label. Find the GVWR, the number of axles, and the axle rating as built, on the A-frame or front cap label.
- Find the axle capacity stamped on the axle itself. A tag or stamp on the axle beam states its individual rated capacity, which should match or exceed what the trailer label implies per axle.
- Read the tire sidewall for load index and load range. Convert the load index to a pound figure per the published load index table, then multiply by the number of tires on that axle.
- Compare axle capacity per axle to tire capacity per axle. Whichever number is lower is your actual safe capacity for that axle, not the higher of the two.
- Compare the lower figure to your actual loaded weight. Weigh the axle, not just the whole trailer, at a scale that reports axle-by-axle weight if you have any doubt.

Manufacturers frequently build in engineering reserve by fitting axles rated somewhat above the trailer's certified GVWR, and the GVWR itself is also constrained by the frame, the tires and the hitch or coupler rating, not by the axles alone. Multiplying per-axle rating by axle count gives you the axle system's own ceiling, not necessarily the trailer's actual certified GVWR, which is always the lower and more relevant number.
What happens if I put tires with a lower load rating than my axle capacity?
The tires become the binding limit for that axle regardless of what the axle itself is rated for. If a 7,000 lb rated tandem axle set is fitted with tires whose combined rating per axle is only 4,410 lb, the safe capacity for that axle is 4,410 lb, not 7,000 lb. Overloading the tires past their own rating is a leading cause of trailer tire failure at highway speed.
Is axle capacity the same thing as GAWR?
They describe closely related ideas but are not always numerically identical. Axle capacity is the rating the axle manufacturer builds into that specific axle assembly. GAWR, Gross Axle Weight Rating, is the figure the trailer manufacturer certifies for that axle position on the finished trailer, which can be set at or below the axle's own rated capacity depending on how the trailer is engineered.
