What do GVWR, GCWR, GAWR, payload and CCC actually mean, precisely?

GVWR, GCWR, GAWR and payload look like one family of numbers and are not interchangeable. GAWR governs a single axle and can be exceeded while the whole vehicle is still comfortably inside its GVWR, which is exactly how a fifth wheel overloads a rear axle without any warning on a total-weight scale.

These terms get used loosely in conversation and precisely on a certification label, and the gap between the two is where mistakes happen. Every term below is defined exactly, and every one is marked as a standard definition, meaning the meaning of the term itself is fixed and traceable, or as a vehicle figure, meaning the actual number behind it exists only on your own vehicle or trailer and nowhere on this site.

The single most important relationship on this page is between GVWR and GAWR. GVWR is a ceiling on the whole vehicle. GAWR is a separate ceiling on each individual axle. A vehicle can sit hundreds of pounds under its GVWR while one axle, usually the rear axle under a fifth wheel pin or a heavy bed load, is already over its own GAWR. Nothing on a bathroom-scale total catches that. Only weighing each axle separately does.

The second trap is dry weight. A trailer's UVW excludes every dealer-installed option: an upgraded awning, a second air conditioner, a solar package, a generator prep, heavier furniture. All of it comes straight out of the cargo carrying capacity the brochure advertised, which is why the trailer's own certification label, not the brochure, is the number that governs.

What does each rating actually measure?

GVWR limits the whole vehicle, GCWR limits the tow vehicle and trailer together, and GAWR limits one axle at a time, independently of the other three.

GVWR, GCWR, GAWR and payload live on your own door jamb sticker, and two vehicles wearing the identical trim badge can differ by hundreds of pounds depending on options.

How can a fifth wheel overload a rear axle while the truck is still under GVWR?

GVWR is a ceiling on the vehicle as a whole. GAWR is a separate ceiling on one axle. A fifth wheel or gooseneck pin sits directly over or just ahead of the rear axle, so nearly all of its weight lands on that one axle rather than spreading across the vehicle the way a passenger sitting in the back seat does. A heavy pin weight, or a bed loaded with tools and a generator, can push the rear axle past its own GAWR while the truck's total weight is still comfortably inside the GVWR.

A total-weight scale reading cannot catch this, because it reports one combined number for the whole vehicle. Only a scale that reads each axle separately, the kind found at most CAT scales and many truck stops, shows the rear axle number on its own. That is the number to compare against the rear GAWR on your door jamb sticker, not the total against GVWR.

What is the difference between NCC and CCC?

NCC leaves out fluids and batteries entirely, which makes it a larger and more optimistic number than CCC, the figure that actually reflects what you can pack.

How do payload, tongue weight and pin weight relate?

This is the arithmetic that catches people who work out a tow rating and stop there. A trailer loaded to 13 percent tongue weight can consume a third of a half ton truck's entire payload before a single passenger climbs in. Where the load actually comes from

Payload is a vehicle-specific figure. The tongue and pin weight percentages are towing convention. Tongue or pin weight is never carried by the trailer alone; it is always subtracted from the tow vehicle's own payload.

How do you find your own numbers?

  1. Open the driver's door and read the certification sticker. On vehicles built since 2006 this yellow or white label states GVWR, GAWR front and rear, and often the payload sentence directly.
  2. Read the trailer's own certification label. Mounted on the A-frame or front cap, stating the trailer's GVWR, UVW and CCC as actually built, including its options.
  3. Check the owner's manual for the tow rating. That figure applies to the exact configuration described, not to the model name generally.
  4. Weigh each axle separately, not just the total. A CAT scale or a certified public scale that reports axle-by-axle weight is the only way to catch a single overloaded axle under an otherwise acceptable GVWR.
  5. Re-check after any real change. New tires, added suspension parts, a permanent toolbox, or a different trailer all shift these numbers and are worth re-reading rather than assuming.

What is the difference between GVWR and payload?

GVWR is the most the whole vehicle may weigh, loaded, on its own wheels. Payload is GVWR minus the vehicle's own curb weight, which is the allowance left for passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight combined. GVWR is a ceiling on total weight; payload is what you are actually allowed to add to reach it.

Can a GAWR be exceeded while a vehicle is still under its GVWR?

Yes, and it is one of the most common invisible overloads in towing. GVWR limits the vehicle as a whole, while GAWR limits one axle independently. A fifth wheel pin or a heavy bed load concentrates weight onto the rear axle specifically, so the rear GAWR can be exceeded while the total vehicle weight still sits comfortably under GVWR. Does a trailer's dry weight include dealer-installed options?

No. Dry weight, or UVW, is the trailer exactly as it left the factory, before any dealer-installed options are added. What is the difference between NCC and CCC on a trailer?

Is curb weight the same thing as dry weight?

They describe the same idea for two different vehicles. Curb weight refers to the tow vehicle empty, with fuel and fluids but no passengers or cargo. Dry weight, or UVW, refers to the trailer as it left the factory. The terms are not interchangeable across the two, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion when working a payload sum.
