Conventional travel trailer, expert

The expert travel trailer tow setup

Last updated Researched from published standards and manufacturer guides, not tested in person

Quick answer

At the top of the bumper pull range you want four point integrated sway control, a proportional controller that handles four axles, tire monitoring across the whole rig, US-made trailer tires and an auxiliary transmission cooler. At this trailer weight the tongue weight alone is frequently a third of a half ton payload, so the truck is the real question.

This is the performance ceiling for a trailer that hitches behind the rear axle, and it is worth being blunt about who should not buy it.

At 9,000 to 12,000 lb the tongue weight at 13 percent is roughly 1,200 to 1,550 lb. Add a 100 lb hitch and two adults and you are past the payload of most half ton trucks before any gear goes in. If that is your situation, the honest upgrade is not on this page, it is a bigger truck or a smaller trailer, and no hitch, no set of air bags and no amount of good hardware changes that arithmetic.

If the truck genuinely carries it, this is the hardware that makes the rig calm.

A large tandem axle travel trailer, roughly 9,000 to 12,000 lb loaded. Every line below is a real product with a live price, and every line is a link. Optional items are marked and excluded from the total.

Expert conventional travel trailer rig

$2,459

Running total as listed, $2,459. This is hardware only: it does not include the trailer, the tow vehicle, or the installation labour on anything that bolts to the truck frame.

The connection

Item Why this one Price
Equal-i-zer 4-point Sway Control Hitch, 10,000 lb Four points of friction sway control built into the hitch itself, working in both directions from the moment the bars are seated, with nothing to disconnect before a tight turn. $552.69
CURT 17123 Weight Distribution Shank, 2 inch, 7 inch drop, 10-1/2 inch rise (optional) A reversible shank if the head sits too high or too low. Measure the receiver with the truck loaded, because a loaded truck sits lower. $122.80
The connection subtotal $552.69

Knowing your numbers

Item Why this one Price
Sherline LM 2000 Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, 2,000 lb The scale the towing community actually uses, hydraulic with no batteries to be dead, and 2,000 lb of capacity for the same money as the 1,000 lb version. $189.90
JACO ElitePro Digital Tire Pressure Gauge, 200 psi Reads to 200 psi for load range E trailer tires. $29.90
Knowing your numbers subtotal $219.80

Brakes and the breakaway

Item Why this one Price
Tekonsha Prodigy iD Brake Controller, 1 to 4 axles Configured from a phone rather than through two buttons, and it supports four axles, which matters if you ever move to a triple axle trailer. $229.99
Trailer Brake Breakaway Kit with Charger, LED Display and 12V 5Ah Battery With a state of charge display, because a flat breakaway battery gives no warning of any kind. $49.99
Brakes and the breakaway subtotal $279.98

Tires and monitoring

Trailer tire failure at highway speed is one of the most common ways an RV trip ends badly. This is not the place to save money.

Item Why this one Price
Goodyear Endurance Trailer Tire, ST225/75R15 117N Made in the United States by a tire company rather than badged by a reseller, and the tire most commonly named by owners replacing what a trailer shipped on. Load index 117 is 2,833 lb per tire. See price
GUTA GT30 Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System, 10 sensors Ten sensors, enough for a dually tow vehicle and a triple axle trailer together. On a tandem trailer it covers the truck as well. $269.99
DEWALT 20V MAX Tire Inflator with Automatic Shut Off Automatic shut off at a set pressure across six tires without standing over a gauge. $139.99
Explore Land Tire Covers, 4 pack, fits 26 to 28.75 inch diameters Ultraviolet exposure while parked is what ages out a trailer tire that never wears out. $48.99
Tires and monitoring subtotal $458.97

The tow vehicle

Helper springs and coolers change how the truck behaves. Neither one changes a single rating.

Item Why this one Price
Mishimoto Universal 13-Row Stacked Plate Transmission Cooler Kit Stacked plate rather than tube and fin, which moves substantially more heat for the same frontal area. Heat is what kills an automatic, and a long grade with a heavy trailer is the hottest it will ever get. $159.95
Air springs matched to your own truck (optional) (no single product we would name) Air springs are sold by exact vehicle fitment, so we will not name one part here. They level a squatting rear end and improve the ride. They do NOT add payload, raise the GVWR or raise an axle rating. See price
LEXIVON 1/2 inch Drive Click Torque Wrench, 25 to 250 ft-lb Reaches 250 ft-lb, which is what a 2-5/16 inch ball nut and heavy duty truck lugs need and which a 150 ft-lb wrench cannot do. $69.97
The tow vehicle subtotal $229.92

At the site and on the road

Item Why this one Price
Furrion Vision S+ Wireless RV Observation System, 7 inch monitor A seven inch monitor rather than 4.3, which is the difference between glancing at it and squinting at it while reversing a large trailer. $460.00
BAL X-Chock Tire Locking Chock, pair Removes the fore and aft rock on a tandem axle. $74.51
Camco FasTen RV Leveling Blocks, 10 pack Interlock on all four sides, so a stack builds wider as well as taller under a heavy jack. $60.03
Rhino USA Trailer Coupler Lock Kit for 2-5/16 inch couplers Heavier steel than the budget locks, sized specifically for a 2-5/16 inch coupler. $54.90
CIPA 11500 Custom Towing Mirrors for Ford, pair Custom fit towing mirrors. Pick the fitment that matches your own truck rather than this one specifically. $68.11
At the site and on the road subtotal $717.55
Everything above $2,458.91

Optional extras listed above would add $122.80 on top, and they are excluded from the total on purpose.

2 items show "See price" because no clean single price was available, so they contribute nothing to this total. The real figure is higher.

Work your payload sum before you buy any of it. Payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV, and no item on this list raises it.

Prices change often and are shown as a guide. Every rating quoted is the manufacturer figure; the rating on the part you receive is what governs, and your own door jamb sticker governs everything.

What you can skip

A cam style sway system, if your routes are not windy and your trailer is not tall and slab sided. Cam systems resist the start of a sway rather than damping one already happening, which is genuinely better, and they are more setup sensitive: bracket position and bar tension have to be measured rather than felt. If you are not going to set it properly, four point friction is the better buy.

Air springs, if the truck is not squatting. They are a handling and ride fix, not a capacity fix, and fitting them to a truck that is already at its payload limit simply hides the evidence.

A fifth wheel. If you are shopping this tier because the bumper pull feels marginal, read the fifth wheel ladder before spending here. A fifth wheel is more stable at these weights, and it also needs considerably more truck.

What to upgrade first

There is not much above this on a bumper pull, which is the honest answer. The remaining upgrades are the tow vehicle and the trailer, not the hardware between them.

If something here is going to be replaced first, it is the sway control mechanism, moving to a cam system for interstate crosswind work, and only if you will set it up by measurement.

The other ladder

This is the conventional bumper pull ladder. If you are weighing up a fifth wheel instead, be aware it is not simply "a travel trailer but better": pin weight runs 15 to 25 percent rather than 10 to 15, and all of it lands in the truck bed as payload. It is a heavier, more expensive hobby that needs a substantially bigger truck, and a first time buyer is usually better served by a conventional trailer they can genuinely carry. The setups hub compares both ladders side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Who should not buy this setup?

Anybody whose payload sum does not already clear the tongue weight with margin. At nine to twelve thousand pounds the tongue weight at 13 percent is 1,200 to 1,550 lb, which exceeds most half ton payloads once passengers and the hitch are counted. The fix for that is a different truck or a lighter trailer, and nothing on this page substitutes for either.

Are premium trailer tires actually worth it?

This is the one category where we would not economise. Trailer tires are loaded close to their rating by design rather than with the reserve a car tire has, they fail from heat at a corner nobody is watching, and the failure happens at highway speed. A tire from a tire company with a traceable service path costs a little more than an unbranded one and is a completely different purchase.

Do I need a transmission cooler for a travel trailer?

If you climb real grades with a heavy trailer, yes. Heat is what kills an automatic transmission and a sustained climb is the hottest it will ever get. A stacked plate cooler is cheap next to a rebuild. If your towing is flat interstate at moderate weight, the factory cooling is usually adequate and this is a premature purchase.

Four point friction or a cam sway system?

Four point friction damps an oscillation and is forgiving about setup. A cam system holds the trailer in the straight ahead position and has to be pushed up a ramp to leave it, so it resists the start of a sway rather than the third cycle of one. Cam is better if you will set bracket position and bar tension by measurement, and worse if you will not.

Will air bags let me tow a heavier trailer?

No. Air springs and helper springs restore ride height and improve handling when the rear suspension squats. They change nothing about the GVWR, the payload rating or the axle ratings. A truck sitting level while overloaded is still overloaded, and the one visible cue that something was wrong has been removed.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published standards, manufacturer towing guides and product specifications, and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Figures described as a rule of thumb are towing convention rather than published standards, and they are labelled that way wherever they appear. Nothing here overrides your own ratings. Work your payload sum before your tow rating, because payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV. Load a conventional trailer to 10 to 15 percent tongue weight and a fifth wheel to 15 to 25 percent pin weight, and never lighter: a tail heavy trailer is what starts sway. Weigh the rig loaded rather than trusting a brochure dry weight. A weight distribution hitch and a set of air bags both restore ride height and control, and neither one raises a single rating. Trailer brakes are required by state law above a threshold that varies by state, and a breakaway battery that has quietly gone flat is the normal condition of most trailers on the road.
