Fifth wheel, expert
The expert fifth wheel tow setup
This is the ceiling, and it is worth saying plainly who should not be here. At 16,000 to 20,000 lb the pin weight at 20 percent is 3,200 to 4,000 lb, plus a hitch. That is a one ton truck, frequently a dually, and no hardware on this page substitutes for one.
What this tier actually buys is two things: a truck bed you can still use, and a rig that does not jolt every time the throttle moves. The first comes from an under-bed mount that leaves the bed flat when the hitch is out. The second comes from a cam action head and a cushioned pin box working together.
A large fifth wheel or toy hauler, roughly 16,000 to 20,000 lb loaded. Every line below is a real product with a live price, and every line is a link. Optional items are marked and excluded from the total.
Expert fifth wheel rig
$5,388Running total as listed, $5,388. This is hardware only: it does not include the trailer, the tow vehicle, or the installation labour on anything that bolts to the truck frame.
The connection
The gooseneck mount goes in once and serves both a gooseneck ball and the fifth wheel head that drops into it.
| Item | Why this one | Price |
|---|---|---|
| B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch for Chevrolet and GMC 2500 and 3500 | The ball turns over and drops flush into the bed floor, so the bed is flat when nothing is hitched. Pick the fitment for your own truck rather than this one specifically. | $694.88 |
| B&W Companion Fifth Wheel Hitch | Mounts into the Turnoverball ball hole rather than to rails, so the bed is completely clear between trips. A cam action latch wraps the kingpin rather than gripping it, which is what eliminates chuck. | $1,099.00 |
| GEN-Y Executive Torsion-Flex Fifth Wheel King Pin Box | Torsion rubber between the kingpin and the trailer frame, absorbing what the hitch does not. This is the upgrade that changes how the trailer rides rather than how it attaches. | $1,199.95 |
| The connection subtotal | $2,993.83 | |
Knowing your numbers

| Brakes and the breakaway subtotal | $279.98 | |
Tires and monitoring
| Item | Why this one | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Carlisle Radial Trail HD Trailer Tire, ST235/85R16 Load Range E | A 16 inch load range E tire, which is what heavy fifth wheels run. Match the load index to your own weighed axle load with reserve. | $170.99 |
| GUTA GT30 Trailer Tire Pressure Monitoring System, 10 sensors | Ten sensors, enough for a dually and a triple axle trailer monitored as one rig. This is the configuration where the cheaper kits genuinely run out. | $269.99 |
| ETENWOLF VORTEX S7 Cordless Tire Inflator for Heavy Duty Vehicles | A large battery and a high duty cycle, because inflating ten tires from 60 to 80 psi thermally shuts down most cordless compressors partway through. | $189.99 |
| Explore Land Tire Covers, 4 pack, fits 26 to 28.75 inch diameters | Ultraviolet protection on tires that cost real money to replace. | $48.99 |
| Tires and monitoring subtotal | $679.96 | |
The tow vehicle
| Item | Why this one | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Mishimoto Universal 13-Row Stacked Plate Transmission Cooler Kit | Stacked plate cooling. A sustained grade climb at this weight is the hottest an automatic transmission will ever get. | $159.95 |
| LEXIVON 1/2 inch Drive Click Torque Wrench, 25 to 250 ft-lb | Reaches 250 ft-lb for heavy duty lugs and a gooseneck ball nut. | $69.97 |

At the site and on the road
| Item | Why this one | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Furrion Vision S+ Wireless 3-Camera RV System with 7 inch Monitor | Rear plus two side cameras, which covers the blind spots a long fifth wheel creates on both sides as well as behind. | $799.46 |
| BAL X-Chock Tire Locking Chock, pair | Tandem or triple axle stabilisation. | $74.51 |
| Camco FasTen RV Leveling Blocks, 10 pack | Blocks that interlock on all four sides, for a wide stable base under a heavy landing gear foot. | $60.03 |
| Rhino USA Trailer Coupler Lock Kit for 2-5/16 inch couplers | Security while parked between trips. | $54.90 |
| At the site and on the road subtotal | $988.90 | |
Work your payload sum before you buy any of it. Payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV, and no item on this list raises it.
Prices change often and are shown as a guide. Every rating quoted is the manufacturer figure; the rating on the part you receive is what governs, and your own door jamb sticker governs everything.
What you can skip
A slider hitch. At this tier the truck is almost certainly a long bed, and an under-bed gooseneck mount sits further back than a rail mounted head anyway. Measure your clearance at full lock before buying a solution to a problem you may not have.
Air springs. A one ton truck carrying a correctly matched fifth wheel should not be squatting. If it is, the payload sum is the thing to check, not the springs.
What to upgrade first
Past this point the upgrades are the truck and the trailer. If one item here gets replaced first it is the pin box, moving to an air ride unit, which is the last meaningful change available to how a fifth wheel rides.
The other ladder
This is the fifth wheel ladder. A fifth wheel needs no weight distribution hitch and no sway control at all, because the pin sits over the truck rear axle rather than hanging behind it. It also needs far more payload than a conventional trailer of the same weight. If the payload arithmetic is uncomfortable, the conventional ladder is the honest place to look. The setups hub compares both.
Frequently asked questions
Who should not buy this setup?
Anybody whose truck is not a one ton, and anybody who has not checked the rear axle GAWR separately from the payload. A fifth wheel concentrates its load over the rear axle, so that axle rating can be exhausted while the truck is still inside its GVWR. A single total weight from a scale will not show you that; individual axle weights will.
Why mount the fifth wheel hitch to a gooseneck ball?
Because it leaves the truck bed flat and usable when the hitch is out, and because the same under-bed mount then serves a gooseneck trailer too. One install covers both trailer types and the bed goes back to being a bed between trips, which is the single most noticeable quality of life change available at this tier.
Is a cushioned pin box worth the money?
If chuck bothers you, it is the most effective fix available after the hitch itself. A rigid pin box transmits every throttle change straight into the cab. Torsion rubber or coil springs between the kingpin and the trailer frame absorb it. If the rig already rides well with a cam action head, tow it as it is and put the money elsewhere.
How much payload does a 20,000 lb fifth wheel need?
At 20 percent the pin weight is 4,000 lb, plus the hitch and the pin box, plus passengers and gear. That is well beyond three quarter ton territory and into one ton, frequently dually. Work it against the yellow sticker in your own door jamb, and check the rear axle GAWR at the same time, because it frequently binds first on a fifth wheel.
Do I still need a tongue weight scale at this level?
You need to know your pin weight, and at this size the practical method is usually a public scale rather than a hydraulic scale you have to get the trailer onto. Weigh the rig hitched, unhitch and weigh the truck alone on the same trip, and the difference is your pin weight. That run also gives you individual axle weights, which is what tells you about the GAWR.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published standards, manufacturer towing guides and product specifications, and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Figures described as a rule of thumb are towing convention rather than published standards, and they are labelled that way wherever they appear. Nothing here overrides your own ratings. Work your payload sum before your tow rating, because payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV. Load a conventional trailer to 10 to 15 percent tongue weight and a fifth wheel to 15 to 25 percent pin weight, and never lighter: a tail heavy trailer is what starts sway. Weigh the rig loaded rather than trusting a brochure dry weight. A weight distribution hitch and a set of air bags both restore ride height and control, and neither one raises a single rating. Trailer brakes are required by state law above a threshold that varies by state, and a breakaway battery that has quietly gone flat is the normal condition of most trailers on the road.
