Fifth wheel, intermediate

The intermediate fifth wheel tow setup

Last updated Researched from published standards and manufacturer guides, not tested in person

Quick answer

A mid size fifth wheel wants a dual jaw hitch that wraps more of the kingpin, a proportional brake controller, tire monitoring across six wheels and a real answer to short bed cab clearance. At 16,000 lb the pin weight at 20 percent is 3,200 lb, plus the hitch, all of it payload.

This is the buy-once tier, and the thing that changes at this weight is how the trailer feels rather than whether it is attached. A single jaw gripping the kingpin leaves slack, and that slack is the chuck you feel in the cab every time the throttle goes on or off. A dual jaw that wraps more of the pin removes most of it.

The other thing that arrives at this size is the short bed cab clearance problem. In a six and a half foot bed, a standard fifth wheel hitch does not leave enough room for the trailer nose to swing past the cab at full lock. It happens at parking lot speed, usually while reversing into a site, and it is not theoretical.

A mid size fifth wheel, roughly 12,000 to 16,000 lb loaded. Every line below is a real product with a live price, and every line is a link. Optional items are marked and excluded from the total.

Intermediate fifth wheel rig

$1,759

Running total as listed, $1,759. This is hardware only: it does not include the trailer, the tow vehicle, or the installation labour on anything that bolts to the truck frame.

The connection

Three parts again: hitch, rails, brackets. Confirm what is in each box.

Item Why this one Price
CURT Q20 Fifth Wheel Hitch, 20,000 lb Twenty thousand pounds and a dual jaw that wraps more of the kingpin than a single jaw, which is the difference you feel as less chuck on throttle changes. $599.99
CURT 16104 Industry-Standard Fifth Wheel Hitch Rails, 25,000 lb Industry standard rails at 25,000 lb, so the rails outlive several hitches. $124.95

1 item shows "See price" because no clean single price was available, so it contributes nothing to this total. The real figure is higher.

Work your payload sum before you buy any of it. Payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV, and no item on this list raises it.

Prices change often and are shown as a guide. Every rating quoted is the manufacturer figure; the rating on the part you receive is what governs, and your own door jamb sticker governs everything.

What you can skip

A slider hitch, if your truck has a long bed. An eight foot bed has the clearance already, and a slider adds cost, weight and a moving part to inspect for a problem you do not have. Measure your own clearance at full lock, slowly, with somebody watching, before you buy the solution.

A cushioned pin box, at this tier, if the dual jaw hitch has already removed the chuck. Tow it first and decide afterwards.

A three camera system. A single rear camera solves the reversing problem. Side cameras solve a blind spot problem that gets serious on a longer trailer than this one.

What to upgrade first

The hitch, to a cam action wrapping design, and ideally one that mounts to an under-bed gooseneck ball so the truck bed is clear between trips. That is the single biggest change in how the rig rides and how usable the truck is.

Then a cushioned pin box, which absorbs what the hitch does not.

Then the camera, to a seven inch monitor and side cameras, which is where the money goes once the mechanical items are right.

The other ladder

This is the fifth wheel ladder. A fifth wheel needs no weight distribution hitch and no sway control at all, because the pin sits over the truck rear axle rather than hanging behind it. It also needs far more payload than a conventional trailer of the same weight. If the payload arithmetic is uncomfortable, the conventional ladder is the honest place to look. The setups hub compares both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the short bed cab clearance problem?

In a six and a half foot bed, a standard fifth wheel hitch does not leave room for the trailer nose to swing past the cab at full lock. The front cap arrives where the back of the cab is, at parking lot speed, usually while reversing into a site. The three real answers are a sliding hitch, an extended pin box, or a gooseneck style coupling that sits lower and further back.

Does a dual jaw hitch really reduce chuck?

It reduces the slack that causes it. Chuck is the fore and aft jolt you feel on every throttle change, and it comes from play between the kingpin and the jaws plus rigidity in the pin box. A jaw that wraps more of the pin removes the play. A cushioned pin box absorbs what remains, and the two together change the ride noticeably.

How much payload does a 16,000 lb fifth wheel need?

At 20 percent the pin weight is 3,200 lb, plus roughly 200 lb for the hitch, so about 3,400 lb into the bed before passengers or gear. That figure exceeds the payload of most three quarter ton trucks and lands squarely in one ton territory. Check the yellow sticker in your own door jamb rather than any published tow rating.

Do I need six tire sensors?

You need one per wheel you want to know about. A tandem axle trailer is four, a triple is six, and covering the tow vehicle rear tires as well takes two more. Trailer tires fail from heat at a corner nobody is watching, so the sensors that matter most are the trailer ones, and covering the truck too is a genuine bonus rather than the point.

Can I use a fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter instead?

You can, and it is a real trade rather than a free saving. An adapter concentrates the pin load into the gooseneck ball rather than spreading it across a fifth wheel head, and some RV makers will not honour a frame warranty on a trailer towed that way. Check the trailer maker position before buying, because the warranty question is usually the deciding one.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published standards, manufacturer towing guides and product specifications, and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Figures described as a rule of thumb are towing convention rather than published standards, and they are labelled that way wherever they appear. Nothing here overrides your own ratings. Work your payload sum before your tow rating, because payload is the limit that actually binds on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV. Load a conventional trailer to 10 to 15 percent tongue weight and a fifth wheel to 15 to 25 percent pin weight, and never lighter: a tail heavy trailer is what starts sway. Weigh the rig loaded rather than trusting a brochure dry weight. A weight distribution hitch and a set of air bags both restore ride height and control, and neither one raises a single rating. Trailer brakes are required by state law above a threshold that varies by state, and a breakaway battery that has quietly gone flat is the normal condition of most trailers on the road.
