- Use mirrors, a spotter, or a rear camera to line up the centerline. The hitch head needs to end up centered under the kingpin, not just generally close. A few inches off center at this stage becomes a fight to correct once the pin starts entering the throat.
- Back slowly until the kingpin enters the hitch throat. Most hitches guide the pin the last few inches even if the approach was slightly off center, but a hitch that will not receive the pin smoothly means stopping and re-aligning rather than forcing it.
