How much heat does a descent put into your brakes?
Going up a grade is an engine and cooling problem. Coming down is a brake problem, and it is the one that hurts people, because brake fade is sudden rather than gradual. The friction material heats until it stops working, and it does not warn you first.
Trailer drum brakes fade sooner than the tow vehicle discs, and they are also the brakes you most need on a descent, because they are what keeps the trailer behind rather than beside you.

The working

The rule, which is not a convention
Published in every truck manual: use the engine and the transmission to hold the speed, and use the brakes in firm, brief applications to shed speed, rather than riding them continuously.
Riding the brakes keeps putting energy into the friction material with no chance to shed it. Firm brief applications put in the same total energy but let the brakes cool between them, and they also keep the brakes at a temperature where they still work.
Choose the gear at the top. Once you are halfway down and moving too fast, the gear you needed is no longer selectable without overspeeding the engine, and you are committed to the brakes.
Gear by grade
On a 6 percent grade, two gears down with tow/haul engaged is the conventional starting point, chosen at the summit.
Rule of thumb Widely taught towing convention rather than a published specification. It is a good starting point and it is not a rating.

Gear guidance is towing convention and varies with your transmission. The energy arithmetic above it is physics.
Trailer brakes matter more going down than going up
Set your brake controller gain properly before a mountain trip, not after. If the trailer brakes are doing too little, the tow vehicle is stopping both vehicles and its brakes are absorbing energy meant for six or eight brake assemblies rather than four.
Run the 25 mph manual override test before you leave. It takes five minutes and it is the difference between arriving at the bottom of a pass with brakes or without.

How do I tow down a long grade safely?
Pick a low gear at the summit, before you have any speed to lose, and let the engine and transmission hold the speed. Use the brakes in firm, brief applications to shed speed rather than riding them continuously, which lets them cool between applications. What causes brake fade?
Heat. The friction material and the fluid absorb the energy of slowing the rig, and beyond a certain temperature the material stops generating friction and the fluid can boil. The loss is sudden rather than gradual, which is what makes it dangerous. Riding the brakes on a long descent is the reliable way to produce it.
Should I use the trailer brakes on a descent?
Yes, and they should be doing their share throughout. Set the controller gain properly before the trip using the 25 mph manual override test. If the trailer brakes are under-set, the tow vehicle absorbs energy meant for all the brake assemblies on the rig rather than just its own, which is exactly how a descent ends badly.
Can I pour water on hot brakes to cool them?
No. The thermal shock can crack a drum or warp a rotor, turning a temporary problem into a permanent one. Pull over somewhere safe and flat, chock the wheels, and let them cool in the air on their own. It takes longer than you want it to, and it is the only correct answer.
What is tow/haul mode actually doing?
Changing shift points so the transmission holds gears longer and downshifts earlier, which keeps it out of a hunting cycle and provides engine braking on descents. It also usually firms up the shifts to reduce clutch slip and heat. It is a real help on grades in both directions, and it is not a substitute for choosing a gear at the summit.
Does weight or grade matter more?
They multiply. The energy going into your brakes is the weight of the whole rig times the vertical distance you descend, so doubling either doubles the heat. A steeper grade concentrates the same energy into less time, which is what makes an 8 percent grade harder than a 4 percent one of the same total drop.
