How far does your trailer cut the corner?

Quick answer

Two different things happen in a turn and people confuse them. Off-track is the trailer wheels following a tighter radius than the tow vehicle, so the trailer cuts the corner. Tail swing is the part behind the trailer axles swinging outward, opposite to the turn, on the side you are not watching.

Both of these catch people at low speed in confined spaces, which is where nearly all trailer damage happens: fuel islands, campground entrances, drive-through lanes and parking lots.

The geometry here is real, but it models a single point hitch on flat ground. A real fuel island is not flat and a real turn is not steady state, so use the figures to understand the behaviour rather than to clear an obstacle by an inch.

Off-track is why you swing wide before turning. Tail swing is why swinging too wide puts the back of the trailer into whatever is on the other side.

What to actually do

  1. Swing wide before the turn, not during it. Move out early so the trailer wheels have room to cut inside. Turning late and sharp is what puts the trailer over the kerb.
  2. Watch the mirror on the inside of the turn. That is where the trailer wheels are tracking, and it is the only way to see whether you have enough room.
  3. Remember the tail is going the other way. While the wheels cut inside, the rear overhang swings out. On a long trailer at a fuel island that is the expensive one.
  4. Get out and look. In a confined space this costs ten seconds and saves a rear cap. Nobody has ever regretted it.
  5. Use a spotter with agreed hand signals. Agree the signals BEFORE you start, including an unambiguous stop. A spotter you cannot see in a mirror is not a spotter.

What is trailer off-track?

What is tail swing?

Why do the wheels cut in while the tail swings out?

Because the trailer pivots about its axles. Everything ahead of the axles follows the tow vehicle around and tracks inside, while everything behind the axles rotates the opposite way, like the stern of a boat. They are the same motion seen from two ends of the same rigid body.

How do I avoid hitting the fuel pump?

Approach so the pumps are on your driver side, which lets you see the whole trailer in your own mirror and removes the blind side. Swing wide early rather than turning sharply, watch the mirror on the inside of the turn for the wheels, and remember the rear overhang is moving the other way. In doubt, get out and look.

Does a longer trailer always turn worse?

It off-tracks more, because the distance from the hitch to the trailer axle is what drives how much the wheels cut inside. Rear overhang is a separate dimension, so a short trailer with a long tail behind its axles can swing more than a long one with the axles set well back. The two dimensions matter independently.

Is a backup camera worth it for this?

For reversing, enormously, because it removes the blind spot that makes backing into a site a two person job. For turning and tail swing it helps less, since the problem is beside you rather than behind. Side cameras and properly extended mirrors address the turning case better than a single rear camera does.
