How do you work out what a half-ton truck can actually carry while towing?

A half-ton truck's payload rating, not its tow rating, is usually the limit that runs out first, because a published tow figure assumes a driver and nothing else. Subtract passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's weight as tongue weight, and only your own door jamb sticker tells you what that payload rating actually is.

We will not tell you what a half-ton truck can tow, and neither should anything else you read, because a published tow rating belongs to one exact combination of engine, axle ratio, cab, bed and drivetrain. Why the payload sticker outranks the tow rating

A manufacturer's published tow rating is produced under a defined test methodology, SAE J2807, which specifies a launch on a grade, a sustained climb, highway handling and a cooling test at a set combined weight with a set number of occupants, usually one. That is the number in the brochure, and it describes what the truck can pull with a driver and nothing else aboard.

Payload works differently. It is GVWR minus the truck's actual curb weight as built, printed on a sticker specific to that individual vehicle, and it accounts for every option, every drivetrain choice and every trim level difference that changed the curb weight. Two trucks with the same tow rating printed in the same brochure can carry payloads that differ by hundreds of pounds depending on the cab size, the bed length, four-wheel drive, and options as small as a sunroof or a heavier stereo system. The tow rating on the window sticker describes a scenario; the payload sticker in the door jamb describes your specific truck.

Work the payload sum yourself

  2. Weigh your actual passengers, not an estimate. Two adults and two children is a very different number from four adults, and both are different again from what a brochure "5-passenger" rating implies about weight.
  3. Weigh or estimate your actual cargo. Everything riding in the cab or the bed: coolers, tools, a generator, a bed toolbox, camping gear.
  4. Add the hitch hardware itself. A weight distribution hitch's spring bars and hardware typically add close to 100 lb, and this is weight most owners forget to count because it never leaves the truck.
  5. Add your tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's loaded weight. Not the trailer's dry weight from a brochure. The trailer as it will actually be loaded, with water, propane and cargo aboard.
  6. Subtract the total from the payload rating. Whatever remains is your real margin. A negative number means the truck is over its payload rating before it has even left the driveway, regardless of what the tow rating says is allowed.

Weight distribution, air bags and helper springs do not add payload

This is the single most misunderstood thing in towing, and it is worth restating plainly: nothing you bolt to the suspension raises payload, GVWR, GCWR or any axle rating. A rubber suspension enhancement kit rated at 6,000 lb of load support or an adjustable air spring kit levels a squatting rear end and steadies the ride under a heavy tongue weight, and both are worth having for exactly that reason. Neither one changes the number on the yellow sticker. A truck that sits level while overloaded is still overloaded.

A weight distribution hitch does something different again: it moves load that is sitting on the rear axle forward onto the steer axle and back onto the trailer's own axles, which restores steering feel and headlight aim. Tongue weight is the fastest way to exhaust what is left

Because tongue weight is a percentage of the loaded trailer, it grows with everything you pack into the trailer too, not just with the trailer's own size. What is the difference between payload and towing capacity?

Payload is the combined weight of everything the truck itself carries, including passengers, cargo and tongue weight, and it is printed on your door jamb sticker.
